ORIGIN & SOURCING:
Lemongrass: Collective of tiny smallholder organic farms across Sri Lanka. These small-scale farmers cultivate lemongrass using traditional methods, maintaining biodiversity and sustainable practices.
Ginger: High Himalayan region of Sikkim, India. Grown at an elevation where cooler mountain air and pristine conditions create exceptionally aromatic, pure ginger with pronounced spicy notes.
Direct Trade sourcing—fairly traded and directly sourced by Rare Tea Company. Grown sustainably without herbicides or pesticides.
PRODUCT TYPE:
Pure loose herbs—this is a herbal infusion (tisane), not tea from the Camellia sinensis plant, making it naturally caffeine-free.
ABOUT THE INGREDIENTS:
Lemongrass: A tropical grass with bright citrus aroma and flavour, used for centuries in Asian cuisine and traditional medicine. The Sri Lankan lemongrass offers intense lemon-lime notes with subtle sweetness—perfectly balanced, never harsh or soapy like lower-quality lemongrass.
Himalayan Ginger: High-altitude Sikkim ginger is prized for its exceptional purity and pronounced spicy warmth. The cooler mountain growing conditions concentrate the essential oils, creating ginger with complex heat—not just hot, but aromatic and richly layered.
ABOUT RARE TEA COMPANY:
Founded in 2004 by Henrietta Lovell (The Tea Lady) to source and supply the world’s finest teas and herbs directly from farmers. Based in London, working exclusively with sustainable farming methods and fair labour practices. The company’s direct trade approach means smallholder farmers receive fair prices they set themselves, supporting their communities and livelihoods.
RARE CHARITY:
A percentage of all sales goes directly to Rare Charity (rarecharity.com), supporting educational scholarships on partner farms—implementing social change through education in tea and herb-growing communities.
PHILOSOPHY:
“Our ambitions go beyond organic and sustainable to a regenerative future for both the land and tea communities.” By sourcing from smallholder collectives and paying fair prices, Rare Tea Company supports both environmental sustainability and economic empowerment for farming communities.
TASTING NOTES:
Bright and uplifting with vibrant lemon-citrus notes from the lemongrass, balanced by warming ginger spice. The lemongrass provides clean, fresh sweetness reminiscent of lemon drops, while the Himalayan ginger adds rich, tingling warmth that builds gently without overwhelming. The combination is refreshing yet comforting—invigorating without being sharp. Brews to a pale golden liquor with aromatic steam.
PERFECT FOR:
Morning awakening (caffeine-free alternative to tea or coffee)
Digestive support after meals (both ginger and lemongrass traditionally aid digestion)
Soothing comfort when feeling under the weather
Hot summer days (brew strong, chill, and serve over ice)
Evening relaxation (naturally caffeine-free)
Pairing with Asian cuisine, especially Thai and Vietnamese dishes
Anyone seeking a naturally revitalising, caffeine-free drink
WELLNESS BENEFITS:
While Rare Tea Company doesn’t make medical claims, both ginger and lemongrass have been valued in traditional medicine for centuries:
Ginger: Known for supporting digestion, providing warming properties, and containing anti-inflammatory compounds
Lemongrass: Traditionally used for its calming properties and digestive support, rich in antioxidants
SERVING VARIATIONS:
Hot infusion: Classic preparation for warming, comforting drink
Iced infusion: Brew double-strength, cool, and serve over ice with fresh lime
With honey: Add a touch of honey for enhanced sweetness and soothing qualities
With fresh lemon: Boost citrus notes with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice
Morning tonic: Brew strong for an energizing, spicy-sweet start to the day
WHY THIS BLEND IS EXCEPTIONAL:
Most commercial ginger-lemongrass blends use low-grade ingredients with faded flavors. This blend showcases premium ingredients from their optimal growing regions—Sri Lankan lemongrass known for balanced citrus notes, and high-altitude Sikkim ginger prized for aromatic complexity. The direct sourcing means maximum freshness and flavor intensity.
STORAGE: Store in the tin in a cool, dry place away from strong odours, heat, and direct sunlight. Keep airtight to preserve the essential oils that give these herbs their aromatic intensity. Once opened, consume within three months for optimal freshness. Sealed product has 5-year best before date (see base of tin).
CERTIFICATIONS: Grown sustainably without herbicides or pesticides, Direct Trade, Fair Trade, Organic farming practices (from smallholder collectives), supports Rare Charity
