THE STORY – SINCE 1885:
The Creator: Stanislao Cobianchi (born 1862) was a passionate alchemist and herbalist who rejected his family’s expectations of religious life to pursue distillation. He travelled across four continents collecting rare herbs, roots, spices, flowers, citrus peels, woods, rinds, barks, seeds, stems, and fruits.
Original Name: First created as “Elisir Lungavita” (Elixir of Long Life)—a health tonic designed to aid digestion and promote wellbeing.
The Renaming: In 1896, the liqueur was renamed Amaro Montenegro to honor Princess Elena Petrović-Njegoš of Montenegro upon her marriage to Crown Prince Victor Emmanuel III, who became King of Italy in 1900. Amaro Montenegro was essential to the royal wedding celebration, launching it to prominence.
“The Liqueur of Virtues”: Influential Italian poet Gabriele D’Annunzio famously described it as “il liquore delle virtù” (the liqueur of virtues).
Survival: Production halted during WWII; the Bologna factory was severely damaged. Reopened in 1946, restoring the brand’s prominence.
Today: Recipe unchanged since 1885, known only to three Master Distillers. Remains one of Italy’s best-selling amari.
40 ERBE – FROM 4 CONTINENTS:
The recipe is a closely guarded secret. Only 13 of 40 botanicals are publicly known:
Known Ingredients:
Sweet and bitter oranges (including petite dried oranges, peels)
Coriander seeds
Marjoram, oregano
Artemisia blend (wormwood)
Cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg
Licorice root
Saffron
Eucalyptus
Vanilla
Plus 27 undisclosed botanicals from around the world.
UNIQUE PRODUCTION – 7 NOTE SYMPHONY:
Cobianchi’s meticulous multi-step process, handed down through generations:
1. Three Extraction Methods:
Bollitura (Boiling): Mincing and cooking ingredients to release full aroma
Macerazione (Maceration): Botanicals macerated in neutral alcohol for 20-30 days
Distillazione (Distillation): Creating concentrated extracts
2. Creating the 6 Aromatic Notes: The 12 “mother essences” are carefully blended to create 6 flavor profiles:
Bitter and herbaceous
Spicy and floral
Chocolate and caramel
Fresh and balsamic
Vanilla and red fruits
Warm and tropical
3. The 7th Note – “Il Premio” (The Prize): The secret finale: an intense micro-distillation of 5 botanicals. Only 1 liter of Premio per 15,000 bottles—the fundamental component that seals the perfect symphony of aromas and brings everything together. This powerful finishing touch is what makes Montenegro truly inimitabile (inimitable).
APPEARANCE: Golden amber with burnished copper highlights. Much lighter in color than many darker amari.
TASTING NOTES:
Nose: Tizer (British fizzy fruit drink), mandarin, cola cube sweets. Fresh coriander, white pepper. Light and inviting.
Palate: Pleasantly balanced between sweet and bitter. Initially sweet with rose petals, dried orange peel, cherry. Light floral notes. Mid-palate reveals: caramel, cola, vanilla, black tea, root beer, anise, subtle earthy spice (cassia bark, allspice, coriander, saffron), tobacco. Zesty orange, clove. Light mouthfeel (not thick or syrupy).
Finish: Mild citrusy bitterness. Wormwood makes itself known—lingering long after other notes fade. Long finish bringing all elements together. Orange zest, gentian freshness.
CHARACTER: Montenegro is a “kinder, gentler amaro”—perfectly positioned between bitter and sweet. Unlike aggressive amari that assault with bitterness, Montenegro eases you in, presenting bitterness as complement rather than core. Lighter and fruitier than dark amari like Averna or Cynar, with more pronounced citrus notes (especially orange). The light character makes it incredibly mixable and approachable—a true gateway amaro for beginners yet nuanced enough for enthusiasts.
AS FEATURED ON BOTTLE:
“INIMITABILE, CON 40 ERBE: 40 erbe aromatiche, provenienti da 4 continenti, selezionate, estratte e miscelate secondo una ricetta segreta, gelosamente tramandata, che rende il prodotto inimitabile.”
(Inimitable, with 40 herbs: 40 aromatic herbs from 4 continents, selected, extracted, and blended according to a jealously guarded secret recipe that makes the product inimitable.)
“UNICO, GRAZIE A 7 NOTE: Bollitura, macerazione e distillazione sono svolte rispettando un metodo artigianale. Da questa lavorazione si ottengono 6 note aromatiche, a cui si aggiunge il ‘premio’: la settima nota, che sigilla la perfetta sinfonia degli aromi.”
(Unique, thanks to 7 notes: Boiling, maceration, and distillation are carried out respecting artisanal methods. From this process, 6 aromatic notes are obtained, to which is added the “premio”: the seventh note that seals the perfect symphony of aromas.)
“Il complesso, gusto piacevolmente equilibrato tra note dolci e amare, lo eleva come ingrediente originale di cocktail classici e innovativi.”
(The complex, pleasantly balanced taste between sweet and bitter notes elevates it as an original ingredient in classic and innovative cocktails.)
