THE VENA FAMILY STORY – SINCE 1894:
The Creator: In 1894, Pasquale Vena—a pastry chef in the small town of Pisticci in Basilicata—created Amaro Lucano using a secret recipe inspired by ancient herbal traditions of the Lucania region (the historical name for Basilicata).
The Name: “Lucano” refers to Lucania, the ancient name for Basilicata—Italy’s instep region between Campania and Calabria, known for its mountains, rugged landscapes, and rich herbal traditions.
Family Heritage: The secret recipe has been handed down from generation to generation within the Vena family. Today, the company remains family-owned (5th generation), maintaining the same ancient recipe and traditional production methods established 130 years ago.
Regional Pride: Amaro Lucano represents the authentic taste of Southern Italy—capturing the essence of Basilicata’s wild herbs and mountain botanicals.
30+ HERBS – SECRET RECIPE:
The exact formula remains a closely guarded Vena family secret, known only to select family members across five generations.
What We Know:
More than 30 herbs were selected for the blend
Botanicals typical of Southern Italian herbal traditions
Likely includes herbs native to Basilicata’s mountains and valleys
Mediterranean herbs, roots, spices, citrus peels
Natural flavours only—no artificial additives
The skilful blending of these 30+ herbs creates Amaro Lucano’s distinctive character—balancing bitter, sweet, herbal, and spicy notes into a harmonious whole.
TRADITIONAL PRODUCTION:
Unchanged Since 1894: Made in Pisticci, Basilicata following the original Pasquale Vena recipe.
Process:
30+ herbs, roots, and spices carefully selected
Maceration in alcohol to extract essential oils and flavors
Natural infusion process respecting traditional methods
Sweetened with sugar and caramelized sugar (for color and depth)
Blended to achieve perfect balance
No artificial flavors or additives
APPEARANCE:
Deep brown to dark amber—rich, inviting color from caramelized sugar and herbal infusions.
TASTING NOTES:
Nose: Herbal and aromatic. Sweet spices, citrus hints, Mediterranean herbs, caramel undertones.
Palate: Complex and well-balanced. Bittersweet with herbal intensity. Notes of roots, spices, citrus peel, caramel sweetness, medicinal herbs. Medium body with warming alcohol presence. The 30+ herbs create layers of flavor—bitter backbone balanced by natural sweetness.
Finish: Long and warming with lingering herbal bitterness. Slightly sweet with caramel notes. Clean and digestive.
CHARACTER:
Amaro Lucano sits in the traditional amaro category—more assertive than “gateway” amari like Montenegro or Averna, but not as aggressively bitter as Fernet. The Southern Italian character shines through with warm spices, robust herbal notes, and caramel depth. At 30% ABV, it has enough strength for cocktails while remaining approachable for sipping. Authentic, unpretentious, and deeply rooted in Basilicata’s herbal traditions.
COCKTAIL SUGGESTIONS:
Lucano & Soda:
Amaro Lucano + soda water + ice + citrus twist. Simple, refreshing aperitif.
